Mộng Thu Cafe is my favorite Pho restaurant in San Francisco (3 min read)
Whenever I had a long night out, I go to Mộng Thu Cafe and eat Pho, my favorite comfort food. Mộng Thu Cafe is in my opinion the best Pho restaurant in San Francisco for their rich soup broth, crunchy Banh Mi sandwiches, all at a very affordable price. It is a family-run business, and I am always greeted so warmly by all the aunties hard at work.
What’s most unique about the Cafe not found elsewhere is the Bun Mam, a variant that uses fish soup instead of the chicken, pork bone, or beef soups found in traditional Pho’s. Owner Kim Lien Nguyen and the family puts lots of love into delivering the tastiest Vietnamese cuisine!
They are closed for vacation but reopen on August 1st, 2023
Restaurant Recs
There Banh Mi’s are $6 and their soups are less than $15, so affordbale! They also have excellent vegan options.
Bun Mam: Fish soup with meat and rice noodles (most popular & unique dish)
Bun Bo Hue: Spicy beef soup with pork and rice noodles (my personal favorite)
Bun Rieu: Grab and tomato based soup
Banh Mi Thit va Cha: Marinated & cured pork sandwich
Vibes & Thoughts
The restaurant is small and truly feels like a cafe. I really like the size of the place as it truly feels mom-and-pop, and you get a more intimate experience with the food.
I’m not kidding when I say this is the best hangover recovery meal. Their broth is rejuvenating. This is one of few restaurants where I feel comfortable eating by myself.
When you search up “best Pho in SF” on Google, Mộng Thu Cafe is hard to find on the top lists. I find that pretty unfortunate because the Cafe easily tops its competitors with their names on popular lists. It is THE most underrated place and SF needs to show them some love!
